The scene depicts a fictional race between all of the modes of transportation that helped to open the American West to the masses. Each one of the vehicles in the painting was important in their own particular category. The horse, of course, was the early lynch pin of traveling around the American West. Also shown are the stagecoach, chuck wagon, 4-4-0 steam locomotive, the Curtiss Jenny biplane and the Model T Ford pick-up truck. Each has taken its rightful place in the history of opening up travel in this great Country.
